“Homunculus” bronze 1991 24x18x22 cm

$5,900.00

Sculpted in 1991, “Homunculus” explores the 16th century notion from alchemy that humans are fully formed beings in the male reproductive gamete.  Hmm…my goodness!… just one example of the esoteric nature of the artist’s broad scope of subject material.  Throughout her career, Syd’s work has frequently focused on the expressive nature of the hand and fingers.  Despite its size, the large hand “delivering” the homunculus seems protective.  The detail of the homunculus itself is breathtaking:  a tiny being with expressive fingers and little feet. AND a little fedora! A whimsical nod to another of the artist’s long-time symbol of the “common man.”

One of The Unlikely Gallerist’s favorites.
